Reviving Connections: U.S. Tourism’s Bold Push to Win Back Canadian Hearts

Visitors stroll along Old Orchard Beach in Maine, July 22, 2025, but the joy of summer travel is dimming for many Canadians seeking vacations in the U.S. Year-to-date statistics reveal a concerning 25.2% decline in Canadian visits to the United States, compounded by an alarming 37% drop in car travel during July alone, as reported by Tourism Economics.

Amir Eylon, president and CEO of market research firm Longwoods International, notes that Canadian travelers are increasingly influenced by the rhetoric and policy decisions emerging from the U.S. administration. Eylon stated, “Canadians were already concerned over their personal finances, but they’ve taken this rhetoric very personally. Unfortunately, things have gone from bad to worse.”

The survey from Longwoods International reveals that 80% of Canadian travelers’ decisions are swayed by U.S. policies. Specifically, U.S. tariffs and economic strategies are viewed as a significant deterrent, with 71% pointing to political statements from U.S. leaders as a major negative factor-up from 64% in April. Instead of heading south, many Canadians are opting for domestic travel or exploring international destinations such as Mexico, the Caribbean, and Western Europe.

The trend is not isolated to Canadian travelers. Experts emphasize that geopolitical stresses and policy issues are contributing to declines in visitors from Western Europe and Asia as well. Overseas arrivals to the U.S. saw a consecutive drop for three months, registering a 3.1% decline in July, and a total year-to-date decrease of 1.6%. This shift has prompted a reassessment of earlier predictions from December, which estimated a 9% increase in international arrivals for 2025; current expectations forecast an 8.2% decline.

Further challenging the outlook for international travel, a $250 visa integrity fee will take effect on October 1, affecting most nonimmigrant visa applicants. This new charge, criticized by the U.S. Travel Association as a “misguided junk fee,” will increase upfront travel costs substantially, further discouraging visitors when the U.S. prepares for significant global events like the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Summer Olympics.

Destinations across the U.S. are bracing for potential declines in travelers this fall. Dave O’Donnell, vice president of strategic communications for Meet Boston, shared concerns, noting a revision from a projected 15% increase in international visitors to a 10% decrease. In response, the organization is launching winter marketing efforts targeting potential visitors in Canada and the U.K., including a promotional event set for Toronto.

In Rochester, New York, just a short drive from the Canadian border, tourism traditionally benefited from a strong Canadian presence, with about 12% to 15% of visitors hailing from Canada. While summer numbers remain incomplete, indicators suggest many Canadians are choosing alternate vacations or staying home. As a response, the city has pivoted its promotional strategy to a gentler outreach, launching a “Dear Canada” campaign to express an open invitation for when travelers are ready to return.

In 2024, Canadians made 20.4 million visits to the U.S., but the year is shaping up to be drastically different, particularly impacting northern cities such as Seattle, Portland, and Detroit, where international visitor numbers are projected to drop by 27%, 18%, and 17%, respectively. Michael Woody, chief strategy officer for Visit Seattle, acknowledged the concerning projections but also noted a surge in domestic tourism that is buoying their summer season.

Not every region is facing challenges, however. Florida recorded a 5% increase in visits in the second quarter of 2025, welcoming 34.4 million travelers, including 640,000 Canadians-a 20% decline year over year. The state’s tourism marketing emphasizes its attractions, while Greg Fisher, CEO of TripShock, questions the reality behind these numbers as many operators report flat or declining business.

As the dynamics of international travel evolve, the U.S. tourism landscape is poised for continued shifts, underscoring the multifaceted impact of policies and perceptions on cross-border relations.
