Exciting New Heights: Boeing’s X-37B Spaceplane Launches Its Groundbreaking Eighth Mission!

Kennedy Space Center, Fla. — The Boeing-built X-37B Orbital Test Vehicle embarked on its eighth mission, launching at 11:50 p.m. ET aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Kennedy Space Center. Currently in orbit, the vehicle is in good health and undergoing standard operational checks.

This mission follows a successful landing of the X-37B at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California on March 7, 2025, after completing its seventh mission. Enhancing its capabilities for this endeavor, Boeing has integrated a service module aimed at increasing the payload capacity for various experimental activities in space.

“Our role is to ensure the spaceplane is the most reliable testbed possible,” said Michelle Parker, vice president of Boeing Space Mission Systems. “Teamwork is essential; while the launch is just the starting line, the real progress hinges on our detailed work in orbit, analysis, and eventual mission return.”

The X-37B carries a series of technology demonstrations from governmental partners, including advanced laser communications systems and a quantum inertial sensor designed to aid navigation in GPS-denied environments. During its last mission, the vehicle executed an unprecedented aerobraking maneuver, allowing it to shift orbits while conserving fuel.

Col. Brian Chatman, installation commander for Space Launch Delta 45, emphasized the significance of having a returnable space platform: “Having a returnable space platform allows us to learn faster. The data we gather from the X-37B accelerates decision-making and strengthens our systems, enabling Guardians to maintain connectivity and navigation even in contested environments.”

The X-37B program is a collaboration between the U.S. Air Force Rapid Capabilities Office and the U.S. Space Force, with Boeing managing the design, construction, integration, and operations of the reusable spaceplane from its facilities in Seal Beach, California, and Kennedy Space Center. Since its inception in 2010, the X-37B has completed seven missions, amassing over 4,200 days in space, with each return facilitating detailed inspections and enhancements.

Boeing stands as a global leader in aerospace and a foremost U.S. exporter, generating and servicing commercial airplanes, defense systems, and space technologies for clients in more than 150 countries. With a dedicated workforce and supplier network, Boeing supports innovation, economic growth, and sustainability while upholding core values of safety, quality, and integrity.

As space exploration continues to evolve, the X-37B missions are pivotal in transitioning innovative ideas into deployable capabilities, exemplifying teamwork and technological advancement in the realm of aerospace.
