Shocking Revelation: No-Entry Violations Surge to 50% of Chennai’s Total Traffic Offenses
In Chennai, traffic violations by motorcyclists and autorickshaw drivers remain rampant despite enforcement measures. Greater Chennai Traffic Police (GCTP) data reveals that ‘no-entry’ violations accounted for a significant 50% of traffic rule violations in 2023 and 2024. The improper use of mobile phones while driving constituted 3% of the cases, while ‘No Parking’ violations made up 10%, underscoring issues like distracted driving and improper parking.
In response, the GCTP launched the Zero Accident Day (ZAD) awareness campaign to improve road safety. As part of the effort, the GCTP organized an informative workshop for auto drivers, emphasizing adherence to traffic rules and safe driving practices. Participants received stickers, badges, and keychains to remind both drivers and the public about the campaign’s objectives.
Additional Commissioner of Police, Traffic, Mr. Sudhakar, noted that these visual reminders aim to enhance road safety awareness. Additionally, exemplary drivers were recognized and rewarded for their adherence to traffic regulations. The GCTP particularly focused on the reckless driving tendencies of some auto drivers, who often exceed speed limits due to passenger demands and deadlines, engage in aggressive maneuvers, and create safety hazards through improper lane changes.
The GCTP’s comprehensive campaign also highlighted other frequent violations, including jumping red signals and illegal parking. Overall, the initiative seeks to curb traffic violations and foster a safer driving environment in Chennai.
