Assam Govt and GSI Unite to Combat Disastrous Landslides: Unveiling an Early Warning System to Safeguard Lives

Assam, Northeast News: In a significant move to tackle the persistent threat of landslides, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) and the Geological Survey of India (GSI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This collaboration aims to introduce a pioneering Regional Landslide Early Warning System (LEWS) in the state.

The LEWS will initially be implemented in the hilly districts of Dima Hasao and Cachar, which have been severely affected by landslides causing considerable loss of life and property. The system will eventually be extended to the entire state, including other vulnerable districts such as Karbi Anglong, Karimganj, and Kamrup (M).

Utilizing landslide susceptibility and hazard maps combined with rainfall forecast data, the LEWS is designed to predict potential landslide events and issue early warnings to mitigate damage. This proactive approach will significantly bolster the state’s disaster management capabilities.

Public engagement is also a key component of this initiative. GSI has introduced the “Bhooskhalan” app, enabling citizens to report landslides, while the “Bhusanket” web portal offers real-time updates on landslide incidents across India.

The MoU was formalized by ASDMA CEO Gyanendra Dev Tripathi and GSI’s Deputy Director General Siladitya Sengupta. Both officials highlighted the project’s importance in saving lives and reducing property damage caused by frequent landslides in the region.

This groundbreaking initiative demonstrates a proactive approach to disaster management, aiming to safeguard Assam’s vulnerable districts against future landslide threats through innovative technology and public participation.
