Distributors Demand Exclusive Slots for Stree 2, Sparking Outrage Amid Bollywood’s Three-Way Box Office Clash!
In just under 48 hours, the much-anticipated release of “Stree 2,” “Vedaa,” and “Khel Khel Mein” is set to hit theaters, but a significant issue looms as single screen theatres have yet to open bookings. This type of clash is familiar in the trade and exhibition sector, but this instance presents unique challenges. Firstly, the box office will see three major films vying for attention simultaneously. Secondly, “Stree 2” is generating overwhelming excitement, leaving “Vedaa” and “Khel Khel Mein” trailing with minimal inquiries.
Distributors of “Stree 2” are demanding all show slots in single screen theatres, leveraging their robust multiplex bookings. This has not sit well with single screen exhibitors who find this condition unacceptable. An exhibitor revealed that “Khel Khel Mein” and “Vedaa” might get just one show each, with the remaining slots going to “Stree 2.” The challenge now is deciding which films get the prime time slots. One theatre owner expressed frustration over programming difficulties and questioned the necessity of releasing three films on the same day.
This tension extends to two-screen and three-screen theaters. Venues with two screens are dedicating one to “Stree 2” while balancing the other between “Vedaa” and “Khel Khel Mein.” Three-screen multiplexes are allocating the majority of their shows to “Stree 2,” leaving fewer for the other two films. Kiritbhai T Vaghasia, owner of The Friday Cinema multiplex in Surat, disclosed that he has paused bookings for “Double iSmart” to manage the demand. “Double iSmart,” already struggling due to the clash, faces limited showings nationwide.
This scheduling conflict raises questions about audience choice and financial willingness to watch multiple films. Director Madhur Bhandarkar commented on the scenario, highlighting the constraints of working-class audiences in affording all three movies.
