6 Officials, Including SDM, Suspended for Negligence in Heartbreaking Hathras Stampede Tragedy
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the stampede in Hathras has called for disciplinary measures against six officials for dereliction of duty, leading to their suspension. The action comes after a thorough examination of the unfortunate event.
The suspended officials include the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), Circle Officer (CO), and Station Officer (SO) of Sikandrarao, along with the Tehsildar and Chowki Incharges of Kachore and Pora. These individuals were identified as having failed to adequately perform their responsibilities.
The SIT, which collected 119 statements, submitted an exhaustive report accrediting the mishap to the local administration’s and police’s negligence. The committee hosting the ‘Satsang’ had invited more participants than authorized, causing the chaos. The investigation unearthed that the tehsil-level officials did not take the event seriously and failed to alert higher authorities.
Notably, the SDM of Sikandrarao gave event approval without proper site inspection and without informing senior officials. Members of the SIT, including personnel from ADC Zone Agra and the Divisional Commissioner of Aligarh, conducted site visits on July 2, 3, and 5 after the stampede occurred during the Satsang event on July 2.
The report’s conclusions revealed serious lapses in duty and oversight, leading the SIT to recommend swift action against those accountable.
