The United Democratic Party (UDP) has reaffirmed its commitment to staying with the National People’s Party (NPP)-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) until the end of the current term. Dispelling recent rumors of a potential withdrawal from the ruling coalition, UDP President Metbah Lyngdoh stated that there had been no internal discussions about exiting the government. Lyngdoh expressed his surprise at reports suggesting an internal faction was considering such a move.

Addressing claims that the party’s poor performance in the recent Lok Sabha elections was due to its association with the NPP and BJP within the MDA, Lyngdoh refuted these suggestions. He acknowledged that the UDP is still analyzing the factors behind its electoral defeat in the Shillong parliamentary seat and has urged its MLAs to engage with the public to identify the core issues.

Lyngdoh also commented on the rising influence of the Voice of the People Party (VPP) and its potential challenge to the UDP as the leading regional party. He asserted that the UDP remains committed to working hard and making a strong comeback.

In response to statements by UDP working president Paul Lyngdoh regarding the possibility of the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) leaving the Regional Democratic Alliance (RDA), Metbah Lyngdoh clarified that the UDP would seek further information on this matter. He emphasized that there is no trust deficit between the UDP and HSPDP and that the RDA remains united.

Lyngdoh also mentioned discussions with HSPDP President KP Pangniang, who assured his continued support for the RDA. Commenting on HSPDP’s independent bid in the upcoming district council elections, he noted the differences between Lok Sabha, Assembly, and district council polls. He confirmed that discussions between the UDP and HSPDP regarding district council elections are yet to occur.
