Visionary Leader Somanathan Transforms Government Finances, Appointed as New Cabinet Secretary | India News
The government has appointed TV Somanathan, an IAS officer from the Tamil Nadu cadre of the 1987 batch, as the next Cabinet Secretary of India. Somanathan, currently serving as the Finance Secretary overseeing the Department of Expenditure, will commence his two-year tenure on August 30, succeeding Rajiv Gauba, a 1992-batch IAS officer who has held the position since 2019.
Somanathan’s extensive experience includes a close working relationship with former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi between 2007 and 2019, during which he witnessed significant economic reforms. Holding a Ph.D. in economics from Calcutta University, Somanathan has also contributed significantly to economic policy as Joint Secretary and Additional Secretary in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s office.
In December 2019, Somanathan was appointed Expenditure Secretary, and by April 2021, he became the senior-most official in the Finance Ministry. His fiscal prudence and strategic expenditure management have been credited with aiding India’s sustained growth rate of over 7% during the pandemic, as he balanced necessary spending without excessive handouts.
Known for his policy-driven approach, Somanathan has been instrumental in eliminating hidden subsidies and enhancing expenditure efficiency, thereby improving budget credibility and transparency. He took a leading role in formulating several Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes and major initiatives like the PM Garib Kalyan and Atmanirbhar Bharat packages. His comprehensive expertise includes stints with the World Bank and the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, and he recently chaired a committee reviewing the government employee pension system.
Somanathan’s diverse educational background includes qualifications as a chartered accountant, cost accountant, and company secretary. His appointment as Cabinet Secretary underscores his significant influence and a track record of effective economic stewardship.
