Outrage Erupts: U.S. Condemns Shocking Sexual Abuse of Palestinian Prisoners Exposed on Israeli TV
Amid a temporary truce between Israel and Hamas, Palestinians in southern Gaza City inspected buildings destroyed in Israeli strikes. The U.S. has called allegations of sexual abuse of Palestinian prisoners by Israeli military personnel “horrific” after a graphic video broadcast on Israeli news. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller urged a full investigation by Israel, emphasizing zero tolerance for such abuses. White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre stressed the importance of treating detainees humanely and respecting their rights.
The controversy emerged following a video aired on Israel’s Channel 12, allegedly showing abuse at the Sde Teiman military facility. The Israeli military has confirmed the detention of five soldiers over serious abuse allegations. An Israeli human rights group, B’Tselem, released a report documenting repeated sexual violence against Palestinian detainees. One detainee described being sodomized with a carrot, with the act recorded on cellphones.
This comes amid heightened tensions and detentions following a Hamas attack on Oct. 7. An estimated 40,000 Palestinians have been killed and thousands more injured since then. Previous reports by the U.N. also detailed sexual abuse by Israeli forces. Palestinian officials estimate around 9,900 Palestinians are currently imprisoned in Israel.
B’Tselem argues that abuse is systemic in Israeli prisons, while some Israeli lawmakers have controversially suggested harsh measures are permissible against Hamas militants. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has not publicly addressed these specific allegations.
