Shocking Surge: Six Mile Turns Into Guwahati’s New Crime Hub
Rising Crime Wave Plagues Six Mile Area in Guwahati
With Guwahati’s burgeoning business and growing population, there’s been a troubling rise in crime in the city’s Six Mile area. Daytime sees a spike in snatching incidents, targeting chains and mobile phones, but as night falls, more serious theft ensues. Thieves rip off copper wires and pipes from air conditioners, along with water pumps and taps, while the night also brings illicit drug peddling and activities involving women.
Six Mile’s strategic road connectivity to various city parts—Noonmati, Khanapara, and GS Road—makes it a desirable residential and business hub. However, the area’s charm is overshadowed by frequent thefts of copper wiring and air conditioning pipes, causing distress among local residents. Surveillance cameras often fall victim to these criminals, allowing them to sell the wires to designated buyers.
One elderly resident, who formerly served as a GMC Councillor, voiced significant concern over the escalating crime. Individuals from low-income backgrounds are reportedly exploited for drug trafficking, leveraging deserted flyover areas as nighttime business hubs. Legitimate businesses close by 11 PM, leaving a window for illicit activities. August saw STF Assam seizing heroin in two significant busts, underscoring the gravity of the issue.
Residents of nearby Rukminigaon also report nocturnal chaos around shops selling cigarettes and tobacco, attracting inebriated individuals and frequent quarrels. Additionally, hooliganism is rampant on Downtown-Khanapara Road, and Six Mile-Panjabari Road remains notorious for drug-related and nefarious activities involving women.
Dispur Police Station confirms the deployment of six patrolling vehicles in the area nightly. Authorities urge local residents to remain vigilant and collaborate to curb these criminal activities.
Increased vigilance and community cooperation are essential in transforming Six Mile back into a safe and thriving locality.
