Urgent Warning from Andhra Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha: Cybercrime Surge Alarming 24% Rise Nationwide
State Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha, alongside Police Commissioner S.V. Rajasekhara Babu, MLAs Gadde Rammohan Rao and Bonda Umamaheswara Rao, and Collector G. Srijana, led a walkathon in Vijayawada on August 10, 2024, to raise awareness about cybercrimes. The event, starting from Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation (IGMC) Stadium and culminating at Benz Circle, saw participation from students of various colleges, police officers, and other officials.
Addressing the attendees, Home Minister Anitha highlighted a 24% surge in cybercrimes, with victims losing approximately ₹1,730 crore over the past four months. She underscored the need for mobile users to remain vigilant against cyber frauds, especially loan apps and money traps.
Police Commissioner Rajasekhara Babu informed the public about the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre, established by the Government of India to combat cyber offences. He introduced the ‘Be a Cyber Citizen’ App designed to educate users and announced the deployment of 200 Cyber commandos along with the formation of 2,000 cyber soldiers to promote cybercrime awareness.
The walkathon concluded with a human chain formation, reinforcing the appeal to the public to stay alert and proactive in preventing cyber frauds. The event saw the active participation of Vijayawada Municipal Corporation Commissioner H.M. Dhyanchand, DCP Gowthami Sali, and other key officials from various departments, emphasizing a united front against growing cyber threats.
