Shocking Revelations: Boulder Attack Suspect Mohamed Soliman Posed as Gardener in Chilling Plot to Target ‘Zionists’
A 45-year-old man, identified as Mohamed Sabry Soliman, has been accused of attempting a violent attack on a pro-Palestine demonstration in Boulder, Colorado, where he allegedly planned to kill participants with Molotov cocktails. Authorities revealed on Monday that Soliman disguised himself as a gardener to infiltrate a gathering advocating for the release of Israeli hostages in Gaza. The police affidavit indicates he referred to the group as “Zionist.”
The suspect harbored intentions to use 18 incendiary devices but ultimately only threw two at the assembly of nearly 20 people after yelling, “Free Palestine.” During the chaos, he reportedly burned himself, highlighting his reckless approach to the situation. Soliman had equipped himself with a makeshift flamethrower but claimed to investigators that he did not target anyone else with it, stating, “I planned on dying.” He explained his motivations, saying he felt compelled to act and would not forgive himself if he refrained from following through with his violent plan. However, he admitted to second-guessing his actions, noting that he had never harmed anyone before.
Court documents reveal that Soliman planned the attack for over a year, targeting what he described as a “Zionist group.” During a press conference, Acting U.S. Attorney J. Bishop Grewell recounted that Soliman expressed no regret for his intentions and stated he would repeat the act if given the chance. Federal and state authorities have initiated separate criminal proceedings against him for hate crime and attempted murder, respectively. He could face further federal charges as the Justice Department considers a grand jury indictment.
In a virtual appearance from Boulder County Jail, where he is being held on a cash-only bond amounting to $10 million, Soliman appeared in an orange jumpsuit for a state court hearing. Another hearing is set for Thursday as the case unfolds. An FBI affidavit noted that following his arrest on Sunday, Soliman expressed a desire “to kill all Zionist people,” referencing his broader grievances against the Israeli state.
The violent incident occurred at the Pearl Street pedestrian mall, a popular area in downtown Boulder frequented by tourists and students. Twelve people were injured during the attack, with six individuals, ranging in age from 67 to 88, requiring hospitalization. Four victims were treated at Boulder Community Hospital, while two others were airlifted to a burn unit at Aurora Hospital.
Additionally, the Department of Homeland Security disclosed that Soliman was in the United States illegally after entering on a B2 tourist visa, which expired in February 2023. As the legal proceedings commence, authorities are stressing the importance of community safety and the need to address hate-driven violence with urgency.
