Assam Group Outraged: Strongly Condemns Worship Ban and Blockade Threat
Assamese Student Union Condemns Hindu Group’s Threat Over Mawjymbuin Cave Ban
Shillong, August 9: The Assam Wesean Student Union (AAWSU) has come forward to support the Mawsynram Dorbar Shnong’s ban on Hindu prayers at the Mawjymbuin cave, condemning the response from the Assam-based Hindu group, Kutumba Surakshya Parishad (KSP). This follows KSP’s threat to blockade roads leading to Meghalaya in protest against what they termed an "anti-Hindu" action.
In a letter, the AAWSU apologized to the people of Meghalaya and accused the KSP of stirring unnecessary discord. "Real Assamese, those who genuinely cherish their heritage, would never stoop to such levels as to disrupt the unity between the people of Assam and Meghalaya,” the letter stated. The AAWSU criticized KSP for trying to impose their rituals on a place treasured by locals for generations, suggesting that the KSP’s actions were more about personal ego than genuine devotion.
The AAWSU emphasized that the Mawjymbuin Cave is a natural wonder, preserved by the local communities and not a "random temple ground" for desecration. They offered to guide KSP members to various temples in Shillong if they wished to show devotion to Lord Shiva, effectively highlighting the inappropriateness of their demand.
The letter further disparaged KSP’s claim to represent Assamese interests, pointing out that "true Assamese" respect cultural boundaries and do not engage in disruptive actions. The AAWSU also noted that some KSP members are, in fact, illegal immigrants posing as true Assamese patriots.
Significantly, the AAWSU urged people not to associate KSP’s actions with Assamese culture and advised against disrupting the harmony between Assam and Meghalaya.
The standoff began when the KSP criticized the Mawsynram Dorbar Shnong’s ban and demanded its retraction and proper arrangements for Hindu worship during the sacred month of Shravan. Responding, AAWSU reiterated that respect for local traditions should precede any religious expression.
