Empowering Change: 1,200 Families in Assam Gain Land Rights Today
The Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) administration has achieved a significant milestone by granting land ownership rights to 1,245 landless families in Parbatjhora sub-division. This historic event marks the first-ever mass distribution of land titles in the area. The ceremony took place at the Kazigaon Garopara Youth Sports Club Playground in the Bagribari circle, where BTR Chief Executive Member Pramod Boro personally handed over certificates to beneficiaries who had long awaited formal recognition of their land rights.
During the event, Boro emphasized the developmental progress made under his leadership and announced plans to distribute certificates to an additional 1,500 landless families by mid-June. He reassured the audience that the administration is committed to ensuring that every landless family receives their due property rights.
Ranjit Basumatary, the Forest Executive Member, revealed that over 800 more families are expected to benefit from provisions under the 2006 Forest Rights Act. “We believe land is not just a piece of earth, but a source of livelihood and dignity,” Basumatary remarked, highlighting the transformative impact of this initiative.
This land title distribution addresses long-standing land disputes and informal settlements that have left many families vulnerable to eviction, lacking access to government benefits and bank loans. With the official titles, beneficiaries can now secure credit, start their own businesses, and transfer property to their children.
BTR officials, including DFO Parbatjhora Avinash Basumatary and Circle Officer Bagribari, attended the ceremony alongside local UPPL party representatives. The administration plans to continue these distributions over the coming months as part of its broader land rights initiative.
Basumatary confirmed that more land titles will be distributed shortly, which will further bolster land rights for residents in the BTR. This landmark initiative not only signifies a major step towards stability for these families but also opens up new economic opportunities in the region.
