Lakhimpur Scientist Triumphs Against All Odds to Win Prestigious Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar Award
Assam Botanist Dr. Purabi Shaikia Honored with Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar Prize
North Lakhimpur: Dr. Purabi Shaikia, a distinguished botanist from Assam’s Lakhimpur district, has been awarded the esteemed Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar Prize, the highest accolade in Indian science. Currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Botany at Banaras Hindu University, Dr. Shaikia is the sixth recipient of this prestigious award from Assam.
The Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar Prize, established in 1958, includes a cash prize of Rs. 15 lakh, a plaque, and a monthly stipend of Rs. 15,000. This honor was bestowed upon Dr. Shaikia for her significant contributions and groundbreaking research in plant ecology, biodiversity conservation, and soil ecology.
Originating from Kadam village in Lakhimpur, Dr. Shaikia is the youngest daughter of the late Chandreswar Saikia and Aaidhan Daikia. Her remarkable achievements bring pride not only to her local community but also to the broader scientific community in Assam.
The last recipient from Assam was in 2021, when Dr. Binoy Kumar Saikia of the CSIR-North East Institute of Science & Technology in Jorhat was honored with the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology.
Dr. Shaikia’s recognition underscores the growing prominence of Assamese scientists in the national arena, highlighting the region’s contributions to significant scientific research and innovation.
