Celebrating Grassroots Heroes: Meghalaya’s Tribute on International Biodiversity Day
Meghalaya celebrated the International Day for Biological Diversity 2025 with a significant state-level event dedicated to grassroots conservation and sustainable development. Held at the U Soso Tham Auditorium, the gathering highlighted the vital link between biodiversity and the United Nations’ 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, under the theme "Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development."
A key highlight of the programme was the presentation of the State Level Biodiversity Awards 2025, which recognized outstanding community-led initiatives in biodiversity conservation. The Mawtneng Biodiversity Management Committee from Ri-Bhoi District received the award for "Best Biodiversity Management Committee" due to its exemplary efforts in conservation. Additionally, two committees, Phlangwanbroi and Kmawan Rum from East Khasi Hills, were jointly awarded for their outstanding work in the "Best Conservation and Sustainable Use of Bioresources" category.
The event also showcased new awareness materials, including the release of a coffee table book titled Caves of Meghalaya and educational posters aimed at raising ecological awareness. A documentary film that featured success stories of community-led conservation initiatives was screened, emphasizing the importance of local engagement in achieving environmental goals.
Established in 2012, the Meghalaya Biodiversity Board has leveraged this annual observance to enhance ecological awareness and align with global initiatives like the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, which was adopted during COP15 in 2022.
