Indus Water Treaty’s Suspension: A Game Changer for Farmers?
Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan stated today that the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty will significantly benefit farmers in Jammu & Kashmir, Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, and parts of Himachal Pradesh. Speaking in New Delhi during a meeting with various farmer groups from across the nation, Chouhan highlighted the need for a comprehensive strategy to maximize water utilisation in the future. He referred to the treaty’s suspension as a historic decision, asserting that providing water to Pakistan is unfair to Indian farmers.
During the discussions, the Union Minister also engaged with representatives from farmer groups, gathering their suggestions regarding the implications of the Indus Waters Treaty. This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring that Indian farmers receive the necessary resources to thrive.
