Vinesh Phogat’s Heartfelt Revelation: Overcoming the Agony of 2024 Paris Olympics Disqualification
Indian Wrestler Vinesh Phogat Disqualified for Weight Overage, Shocking Wrestling Community
PARIS: Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat faced disqualification from the women’s 50kg category final at the Paris Olympics after being found 100 grams over the weight limit. This stunning turn of events came just hours after Phogat’s celebrated victory over world number one and defending champion Yui Susaki in a stellar opening-round performance.
The disqualification has sent shockwaves through the Indian wrestling community. Despite the disappointment, Phogat showed resilience, telling Indian coaches who visited her post-exclusion, "It’s part of the game." National coach Virender Dahiya and assistant coach Manjeet Rani recounted their efforts to console the distraught athlete. "The girls were feeling pretty low after hearing the news. Vinesh was brave and remarked, ‘It’s hard luck that we missed the medal, but it is part of the game,’” Dahiya said.
Earlier in the day, Phogat had been assured of at least a silver medal. However, she faced the harsh reality of Olympic regulations when she couldn’t make the weight cut for the second weigh-in. The 29-year-old, who was making history by reaching the gold medal bout for the first time in her career, was subsequently left without a medal. The situation was compounded as Phogat had to be taken to the polyclinic in the Games village due to severe dehydration. An Indian coach confirmed, “She was found overweight by 100 grams this morning. Rules do not allow this and she has been disqualified.”
Adding to the day’s misfortune, Indian wrestler Antim Panghal also faced an early exit in the women’s 53kg category, losing her opening bout by technical superiority. Panghal’s coach noted, “She just could not play her game, did not look in her element.”
The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has requested privacy for Phogat and expressed regret over her disqualification in a statement, urging respect for Phogat’s privacy as the team focuses on ongoing competitions. This was Phogat’s third Olympic appearance.
