Sports stars and notable personalities across India have rallied in support of wrestler Vinesh Phogat, who was taken to a polyclinic inside the Games village due to severe dehydration. Renowned cricketer Sunil Gavaskar called the incident “most unfortunate and unfair,” urging strong intervention from the Indian Olympic Association and the government.

Olympic bronze medallist Sakshi Malik described the situation as “devastating” and expressed deep empathy for Phogat, stating she would have given her own medal to Phogat if possible. Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist Bajrang Punia and former wrestler Geeta Phogat both demanded that Phogat be awarded the silver medal. “GIVE VINESH SILVER,” Punia wrote on social media, echoed by Geeta Phogat and USA wrestler Jordan Burroughs. Burroughs also suggested immediate rule changes for United World Wrestling, including a 1kg weight allowance on the second day and securing medals for both finalists after semifinal victories.

Yuvraj Singh, India’s former World Cup-winning all-rounder, encouraged Phogat to make a strong comeback, emphasizing her ability to make the nation proud. Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar praised the courage and determination of both Vinesh Phogat and Nisha Dahiya, who fought bravely despite their setbacks. Tendulkar stated, “Your resilience and heart have made a lasting impact. Hold your heads high.”

Anand Mahindra, chairman of the Mahindra & Mahindra group, expressed his disbelief over the incident, and AAP MP Sanjay Singh called the disqualification a “grave injustice” and suggested that India should consider boycotting the Olympics if the matter is not resolved. The nation stands united in support of Vinesh Phogat, seeking immediate action to address the perceived unfair treatment.
