Honored with Pride: Tripura Weaver Wins 2023 National Handloom Award for Stunning Traditional Manipuri Attire
Tripura’s Nirmala Sinha Receives National Handloom Award 2023
Agartala, August 7, 2024 – Nirmala Sinha, a divyang resident of Barasurma village in Tripura’s Dhalai District, has been awarded the National Handloom Award 2023 by the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. Showcasing exceptional weaving skills, Sinha has dedicated 35 years to crafting the traditional Manipuri attire, Inaphi, using natural dyes.
Despite facing numerous challenges, Sinha’s expertise in creating the Inaphi—a wrap-around cloth traditionally used by Manipuri women to cover the upper body—stands out for its vibrant, attractive design. Employing traditional methods, she uses natural dyes to maintain authenticity in her creations. "Inaphi is more than just a piece of clothing; it’s a colorful and cultural symbol, akin to a shawl or dupatta," Sinha explained.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented the award to Sinha at a ceremony in Delhi on August 7. She is one of six women from Northeast India honored with this prestigious accolade. This recognition highlights not just her individual talent, but also the rich cultural heritage and craftsmanship of the region.
Sinha’s achievement is a beacon of inspiration for the handloom community, demonstrating how traditional skills and perseverance can lead to national recognition. The National Handloom Award underscores the importance of preserving and promoting indigenous crafts and artisans, particularly those overcoming significant personal challenges.
