Urgent Plea: Meghalaya Education Minister Urges SSA Non-Teaching Staff to End Heartfelt Indefinite Sit-in Protest
Meghalaya Education Minister Rakkam Sangma has called on the protesting Samagra Shiksha (SSA) non-academic staff to end their agitation for salary enhancement, announcing that the state government is now considering their demands. Sangma voiced his support for the staff’s demands, acknowledging that their current salary structure is “not systematic.”
In a press briefing, Sangma stated that the staff’s grievances are valid and assured that steps are being taken to address them. His remarks followed the second meeting of the rationalisation committee, which was set up by the state government to review and recommend changes to the salaries of SSA staff at various administrative levels, including state, district, and block levels. The committee has assured the employees in writing that their demands for a salary enhancement are under consideration.
The SSA non-academic staff had initiated an indefinite sit-in demonstration at Malki ground in Shillong on July 31, rejecting the state’s offer of a 25% salary increase and maintaining their demand for an 80% hike. Over 1,037 non-teaching staff under the SSA programme are part of this wage dispute, arguing that their salaries have remained unchanged since 2016, falling short of meeting the rising living costs.
Despite the Meghalaya government’s announcement on July 26 promising a 25% salary increase, the employees deemed this insufficient to address the financial pressures they face. The staff’s persistent demand underscores the necessity for a significant salary enhancement to ensure financial well-being and sustain their livelihoods in the face of inflation.
The unfolding situation puts pressure on the state government to find a resolution that balances fiscal responsibility with fair compensation for its workers, who play a crucial role in the educational framework of Meghalaya.
