Russia Stands Strong with India: Full Support in Battle Against Terrorism, Affirms MoS Defence
Russia has reaffirmed its unwavering support for India in combating terrorism, pledging to expedite the fulfillment of military orders currently in progress. This assurance comes from Union Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth during his recent visit to Moscow, where he participated in the 80th anniversary commemorations of the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany in World War II.
During his visit, Seth met with Russian Deputy Defence Minister Col Gen Alexander Fomin, emphasizing the necessity of deepening military and technical cooperation between the two nations. “Russia assured that it will support us in our battle against all manifestations of terrorism,” said Seth, highlighting the ongoing collaboration rooted in existing agreements.
Seth expressed gratitude for Russia’s backing against cross-border terrorism, noting that both nations have agreed to strengthen their ties through existing frameworks and regular consultations. The Minister’s remarks underscore the strategic partnership as each nation faces unique security challenges in their respective regions.
While in Moscow, Seth also paid tribute to fallen soldiers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. In a gathering with members of the Indian community, he remarked, “The colder the weather in Russia, the warmer the friendship with India,” playfully addressing the unusually cold May temperatures this year, which contrasted with the typically mild spring season.
Seth recounted his interactions with Russian President Vladimir Putin, stating, “I had an opportunity to meet President Putin thrice. He very warmly greeted me and impressed me with his humble nature.” These comments reflect the strong diplomatic rapport between the leaders of the two countries.
The Victory Day celebrations on May 9 hold significant historical importance, marking the surrender of Nazi Germany in 1945. In January of that year, the Soviet Army initiated a major offensive against enemy forces, culminating in the unconditional surrender signed by military commanders on May 9. This day memorializes the profound sacrifices made by Soviet soldiers and civilians during the war, with the Soviet Union suffering an estimated 24 million casualties.
Russian President Putin recently articulated the pivotal role played by Soviet forces during the war, stating, “On the banks of the Volga, our troops halted and crushed the enemy. A decisive blow was delivered to the Nazi war machine, marking a turning point in the war.” He emphasized the importance of the upcoming anniversary, noting it as an opportunity to honor the legacy of those who fought for victory.
As India and Russia continue to navigate complex geopolitical landscapes, the commitment to counter-terrorism and military cooperation remains central to their bilateral relationship. The discussions held during Seth’s visit will likely serve as a foundation for further collaboration, reinforcing the strategic partnership between these two nations poised to tackle common challenges in the global arena.
With the world watching, the strengthening ties between India and Russia may foster increased stability and security not just for the involved nations, but for the broader international community as well.
