Meghalaya Students Relocated to New Delhi: A Bold Response to Rising Indo-Pak Tensions
Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has confirmed that approximately 70 students from the state, currently pursuing their studies in Punjab and Haryana, have been relocated to the Meghalaya House in New Delhi for their safety. In a statement shared on X, CM Sangma emphasized the decision was prompted by the escalating tensions between India and Pakistan. He noted, “In view of the prevailing situation between our nation and Pakistan, as of this morning, about 70 students from Meghalaya who are pursuing their studies in Punjab and Haryana have been accommodated in Meghalaya House, Delhi.”
The Chief Minister further stated that the authorities are actively working to ensure the safety and well-being of the state’s students, with expectations of additional students arriving soon. “We are expecting some more students who are still on their way,” he said.
In an effort to maintain security, the Meghalaya government had previously enforced a nightly curfew extending 200 meters from the Indo-Bangladesh border in the South West Garo Hills District. District Magistrate Hema Nayak issued the order to limit movement between 8:00 PM and 6:00 AM daily.
Additionally, the Assam government has bolstered its support for students from the state studying in various regions across India. An official notice from the Office of the Resident Commissioner at Assam Bhawan in New Delhi, dated May 10, highlights a dedicated helpline along with designated contact persons for students needing assistance. The notice encourages students facing difficulties to reach out to Assam Bhawan for help.
The Assam Bhawan has assured that these contact lines will remain operational around the clock, providing students with a reliable point of contact for any urgent needs during this challenging time.
