Google’s Gemini Nano: Ultimate Shield Against Online Scams in Chrome
Google is enhancing its fight against online scams by deploying sophisticated AI tools across Search, Chrome, and Android. The tech giant announced on May 8 that it will be integrating its on-device large language model, Gemini Nano, into the desktop version of Chrome, providing an extra layer of protection against scams. This feature will later extend to Android devices. The integration aims to bolster the Enhanced Protection mode of Safe Browsing in Chrome.
According to Google, the on-device approach offers immediate insights into potentially risky websites, allowing the company to provide protection even against previously unseen scams. “Gemini Nano’s LLM is ideal for this task due to its capability to analyze the intricate and diverse nature of websites, enabling us to adapt swiftly to evolving scam tactics,” the company stated in a blog post. They highlighted that they have already employed this AI-driven strategy to tackle remote tech support scams.
In addition to Gemini Nano, Google plans to introduce AI-powered alerts for users on both Chrome and Android platforms. When the on-device machine learning model identifies a suspicious notification, users will receive a warning with options to either unsubscribe or view the blocked content. If users believe a warning was issued in error, they can choose to allow notifications from that specific website in the future.
For several years, Google has actively leveraged AI to combat online scams. Reports indicate that the AI systems utilized by the company block millions of fraudulent search results daily. These advanced systems meticulously scan massive amounts of web text, identifying coordinated scam operations and spotting emerging threats. Google noted a marked increase in fraudsters impersonating airline customer service representatives, targeting individuals seeking assistance. They revealed that AI has enabled them to cut down these airline-related scams by over 80 percent within Search.
Furthermore, AI has augmented the company’s capabilities, enabling it to identify twenty times more scam web pages than previously possible. In an effort to combat unwanted scam calls and messages, Google has rolled out on-device, AI-powered Scam Detection in Google Messages and Phone applications on Android devices. This comprehensive approach illustrates Google’s commitment to advancing its AI tools to protect users from an ever-evolving landscape of online fraud.
