Pakistan Seeks Urgent International Loans, Calls for Global Support to ‘De-escalate’ Crisis

As India’s Operation Sindoor escalates its offensive against terrorist infrastructures in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), the Pakistani government has urgently appealed to the international community for financial assistance and support in de-escalating tensions. This appeal was made through the verified account of Pakistan’s Economic Affairs Division on X, stating, “Govt of Pakistan appeals to International Partners for more loans after heavy losses inflicted by enemy. Amid escalating war and stocks crash, we urge international partners to help de-escalate. Nation urged to remain steadfast.”

This public plea comes on the heels of significant military losses faced by Pakistan and a deepening financial crisis, with the country’s debt to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) reaching approximately USD 8.8 billion, making it the fourth-largest debtor to the institution. The KSE-100 index has seen a plunge of over 7,500 points—more than 6%—since April 23, indicating a severe decline in investor confidence. Moody’s has also warned that prolonged hostilities with India could critically hinder Pakistan’s economic recovery and fiscal stability.

In response to the ongoing conflict, Pakistan launched a substantial drone and missile attack on Indian military sites on the night of May 7-8. However, India’s Ministry of External Affairs reported that these assaults were successfully intercepted by a powerful Integrated Counter-UAS Grid and Air Defence systems. Colonel Sofiya Qureshi addressed reporters, noting, “This morning, the Indian Armed Forces targeted Air Defence Radars and systems at a number of locations in Pakistan. Indian response has been in the same domain with same intensity as Pakistan. It has been reliably learnt that an Air Defence system at Lahore has been neutralised.” She elaborated on Pakistan’s attempted strikes which included targets in several Indian cities such as Srinagar, Jammu, Amritsar, and Bhuj, asserting that Indian forces neutralized these threats.

Further clashes were reported on the night of May 8-9 along the Line of Control and the western border. The Indian Army confirmed successfully repelling multiple drone assaults and ceasefire violations, stating, “The drone attacks were effectively repulsed and befitting reply was given to the CFVs. Indian Army remains committed to safeguarding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Nation.” Sources from the Indian military indicated that over 50 Pakistani drones were shot down during operations along the LoC and International Borders earlier on Thursday.

These developments underscore the escalating tensions between the two nations and the complex interplay of military action and financial instability facing Pakistan amid the ongoing crisis.
