Hollywood Actor Daniel Caltagirone Discusses Unique Role in Pa Ranjith’s ‘Thangalaan’

New Delhi, Aug 6: Notable actor Daniel Caltagirone, renowned for roles in major films such as ‘The Pianist’ and ‘Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life,’ is set to captivate Indian audiences as the antagonist Lord Clement in Pa Ranjith’s highly anticipated Tamil film ‘Thangalaan.’ The film, starring Vikram in the lead, is set in the 19th century and revolves around the British-discovered Kolar gold mines in India.

Caltagirone, who shot for six months in Rajasthan and has previously worked with Indian directors like Shekhar Kapoor, assures that his portrayal of the British officer will defy clichés often seen in Indian cinema. He revealed, “My major concern was to avoid the stereotypical portrayal of a British officer. The director allowed me to add depth to the character, making it more authentic and nuanced.”

Spending a year in India, navigating through its diverse seasons, Caltagirone expressed his growing affinity for the country. He humorously noted, “I became acclimated to the madness of the weather. It was challenging, but now that filming has wrapped, I am thoroughly enjoying it.”

On experiencing an Indian film set, he initially found the environment chaotic but soon appreciated its unique, controlled chaos. “On my first day, I was shocked by the noise and movement, thinking something was wrong. But I quickly realized it was a controlled chaos. There’s a palpable ‘anything is possible’ vibe, which I grew to appreciate,” he shared.

His naturalistic acting style faced an adjustment period, as the director advised a different approach suited to the film’s heightened reality. Within weeks, Caltagirone adapted and now wonders how his Western colleagues will perceive this style. Reflecting on the experience, he described it as one of his most challenging yet rewarding projects.

A graduate of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with experience at the Royal Shakespeare Company, Caltagirone emphasized how his theatrical training shaped his acting career. Despite his diverse roles, he confessed his preference for comedy, highlighting the genre’s unique appeal to him.

Daniel Caltagirone’s upcoming role in ‘Thangalaan’ marks another significant chapter in his illustrious career, promising a memorable and nuanced performance.
