India Stands Strong: Jaishankar Urges Nationals Amidst Bangladesh Crisis in RS Briefing
Guwahati, August 6: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has addressed concerns regarding the influx of illegal immigrants owing to the ongoing political crisis in neighbouring Bangladesh. Speaking at the Rajya Sabha, Jaishankar assured that the Indian government is closely monitoring the situation, maintaining “close and continuous” contact with the Indian community in Bangladesh via its diplomatic missions.
Jaishankar informed the Parliament that Bangladesh’s Army Chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman, in a national address on August 5, spoke about assuming control and forming an interim government. He highlighted the safety measures being taken for the approximately 19,000 Indian nationals in Bangladesh, including around 9,000 students, most of whom have already returned to India by July.
He also mentioned the arrival of former Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina in Delhi on Monday evening. Hasina made a last-minute request to land in India after a meeting with security officials, where she decided to resign amid escalating tensions and protests in Dhaka despite a curfew.
In light of the evolving situation, the central government has instructed border guarding forces to remain exceptionally alert. Many Indian nationals have already begun to leave Bangladesh, citing increased attacks on Hindu minorities, Awami League leaders, and government establishments. Those crossing through Akhaura reported minimal difficulties reaching the border.
Jaishankar emphasized the government’s commitment to safeguarding Indian nationals and maintaining regional stability, amidst the unfolding political turmoil in Bangladesh.
