Guwahati, May 8: On June 21, 2025, Guwahati will celebrate its 176th anniversary as an urban entity, a designation it gained through Act XXVI of 1850. From a modest town of approximately 3,000 residents in 1850, Guwahati has evolved into a bustling metropolitan area with a population exceeding 1.4 million and an expanded geographical footprint of 217 square kilometers.
Reflecting on its early years, the Guwahati of the mid-19th century was characterized by rudimentary living conditions, lacking even a single cement structure. Homes were primarily built using wooden posts topped with thatch roofs, with only a handful featuring corrugated iron roofs. The Mahafezkhana, established in 1865, was one of the few notable buildings of that era. Roads were virtually non-existent, with narrow lanes dimly lit by carbide and kerosene lamps after nightfall, and not a single paved road in sight.
Today, Guwahati is unrecognizable, boasting modern amenities such as high-rise buildings, luxury hotels, and shopping malls. However, the urban transformation, while impressive, has come at a cost. Many residents now harbor a sense of trepidation as the city’s rapid, unplanned growth threatens to compromise its livability. Overpopulation, increasing traffic congestion, and insufficient waste management are among the pressing challenges that could make Guwahati less desirable as a place to live.
The potential for Guwahati to develop into a well-planned city has largely been squandered due to a combination of neglect and mismanagement. The 1960s marked a crucial period when discussions about a master plan emerged, yet the actual implementation lagged for years. The push for a new capital away from Shillong further complicated matters, as land acquisition surged without adequate planning or preservation of green spaces.
Significant opportunities to establish a structured urban landscape were missed during crucial decision-making phases, particularly in the 1980s. A master plan drafted in 1985 failed to gain traction due to lack of transparency and motivation, as political maneuvering and environmental degradation took precedence over systematic urban development.
In the present day, Guwahati faces deteriorating infrastructure, with many roads in a sorry state. The ongoing construction of a five-kilometer flyover has exacerbated traffic woes, leaving pedestrians to navigate dangerous conditions posed by potholes and exposed construction sites. The impending rainy season only adds to the problems, as poor drainage systems promise further inconveniences.
While plans for new infrastructures like flyovers continue to unfold, addressing foundational issues has become a lower priority for city planners. The necessity for a comprehensive strategy that accommodates the city’s burgeoning population is more urgent than ever. With North Guwahati also experiencing growth, it is imperative that lessons from Guwahati’s past are not ignored, and that proper planning is integrated into the development of new areas.
For Guwahati to thrive as a leading metropolitan city, the collaboration of civic authorities, planners, and residents is essential to ensure that future developments are sustainable and enhance the quality of urban life, rather than detract from it.
