US Government’s Potential Bitcoin Reserve Sparks Debate
US presidential hopeful Donald Trump has made a bold campaign promise: to create a state bitcoin reserve. Speaking to a captivated audience at a crypto convention in Nashville, Tennessee, Trump assured voters that his administration would retain 100% of all bitcoin held by the US government. This move, he asserted, would form the "core of the strategic national bitcoin stockpile."
Trump isn’t alone in his vision. Senator Cynthia Lummis proposed legislation for the US to purchase one million bitcoins, approximately 5% of the total supply. Independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has gone further, suggesting a government reserve of four million bitcoins.
Currently, the US government holds around $11.1 billion worth of cryptocurrency, including 203,239 bitcoin tokens, primarily obtained through criminal seizures. This accounts for roughly 1% of the global bitcoin supply, which is capped at 21 million coins.
A government bitcoin stockpile could have significant market implications. Mark Connors, head of global macro at Onramp Bitcoin, believes it would positively impact bitcoin’s price due to the reduced supply. However, fewer available tokens for trading might also increase volatility if the government decides to liquidate part of its reserves.
The idea is met with mixed feelings within the crypto community. While some see it as positive attention from both political parties, others view it as ironic, given bitcoin’s decentralized ethos. Frank Kelly of DWS Group suggests that the reserves could be managed similarly to the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, with varying degrees of control by the president and Congress.
While the concept remains speculative, it underscores the growing importance of digital assets in political discourse. Market participants are optimistic that this heightened attention will persist beyond the upcoming election.
