Delhi University to Start First-Year Classes on August 29 Following Delays

Delhi University (DU) is set to commence classes for first-year undergraduate students on August 29, following nearly a month-long postponement. Initially, the new academic session was slated to begin on August 1, but it was delayed due to a holdup in the announcement of the Common University Entrance Test (CUET)-UG results by the National Testing Agency (NTA). The NTA has come under fire for alleged irregularities in several competitive examinations it conducted.

The CUET-UG results, which play a crucial role in admissions to central universities across India, were finally declared on July 28, missing the original June 30 deadline by almost a month. This delay has sparked criticism from the academic community, who are concerned about its ramifications on the educational flow.

Professor Abha Dev Habib from Miranda House highlighted that the staggered academic calendar for first-year students, compared to other cohorts, would strain both educational infrastructure and faculty. "When examinations are held for other years, classrooms are allocated for these exams, and teachers are assigned as invigilators. This will, in turn, impact the classes for first-year students," Ms. Habib pointed out.

The delayed start has not only disrupted the academic start but has also raised concerns about the overall scheduling and resource allocation within DU, indicating a broader issue of administrative efficiency and planning.

This development invites both scrutiny and calls for introspection on part of the NTA and DU regarding their coordination and execution of critical academic processes. Students and teachers alike will be keenly observing how this rescheduled commencement aligns with the broader academic timelines.

For now, all eyes are on August 29, when DU’s newest undergraduates will finally begin their academic journey. The hope is that the institution will successfully navigate this delay and ensure a smooth academic year ahead.
