Kuki-Zo MLAs Urgently Plead to PM Modi: Save Our Guardians, Keep Assam Rifles in Manipur Amid Alarming Replacement Rumors
Manipur MLAs Urge PM’s Intervention Over Assam Rifles Replacement with CRPF
In an urgent appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, ten Kuki-Zo MLAs from Manipur have requested the continued deployment of the Assam Rifles (AR) in sensitive state areas rather than being replaced by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). This plea comes amid reports suggesting that two Assam Rifles battalions are set to be replaced by CRPF units.
The legislators emphasized the potential escalation of violence if the Assam Rifles were removed. In their memorandum to the Prime Minister, they highlighted the AR’s profound understanding of the local terrain and communities, describing them as a "neutral force." They criticized the proposed replacement as a "sinister design."
"We have come to learn that there is a plan to withdraw the 9th and 22nd Battalions of AR from their current sensitive deployment in Kangvai and Kangpokpi. This wholesome decision to replace the aforementioned AR battalions with CRPF at this critical juncture is nothing but a sinister design," the MLAs stated in their memorandum, as quoted by PTI.
Their appeal follows media reports indicating that a significant number of Assam Rifles troops could be moved from Manipur to Jammu. The memorandum underscored the Assam Rifles’ crucial role in maintaining law and order, noting that their unbiased service has been pivotal in preventing violence escalation in the region.
"The Assam Rifles has the most experience among central armed police forces in Manipur with unparalleled knowledge of the local populace, both Kuki-Zo tribals and Meiteis. Their understanding of the culture and geopolitical sensitivities of the region has been crucial in fostering an environment of peace," the letter stated.
The MLAs stressed that if the 9th and 22nd Battalions were moved, they should be replaced by other Assam Rifles battalions instead of the CRPF.
Manipur has witnessed severe ethnic violence, resulting in over 200 deaths and thousands being rendered homeless since May last year. The conflict primarily involves the Imphal Valley-based Meiteis and the hill-based Kuki-Zo groups.
This appeal from Kuki-Zo MLAs aims to ensure continued stability and peace in sensitive regions of Manipur by keeping the Assam Rifles deployed.
