Sikkim Takes a Stand Against Public Nuisance
In a bold move to maintain hygiene and cleanliness in public spaces, the Rangpo Nagar Panchayat (RNP) team in Sikkim has taken action against several travellers who were caught urinating in the open near the Atal Setu bridge. The incident took place on March 30, when a passenger bus halted near the bridge, and some passengers relieved themselves in the open area instead of using the available public restrooms.
The RNP team, on routine inspection, quickly intervened and imposed fines on the offenders. The bus driver was also penalized for failing to inform passengers about the rules against open defecation and the importance of cleanliness under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. According to officials, the bus driver’s negligence was a key factor in the incident, and he should have advised passengers to use the available public facilities.
Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang has been actively promoting cleanliness and discipline as part of his vision for a better and more sustainable Sikkim. His emphasis on Swachhata (cleanliness) being a way of life for every citizen resonates through the community. As part of their initiative, the Rangpo Nagar Panchayat has assured that strict monitoring will continue, and they have requested the cooperation of citizens in keeping Sikkim clean. “A clean environment is the responsibility of everyone. We need people to follow rules and use public facilities instead of polluting public places,” an RNP official said.
