Siachen Base Camp to Join Power Grid by September — Historic Upgrade
Siachen Base Camp will be connected to India’s power grid for the first time by September 15, 2026, Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena announced after a review of the Union Territory’s power sector. Mr Saxena directed officials on Friday to complete a set of transmission projects that will also bring first-time grid connectivity to the remote regions of Zanskar and Nubra, saying the work represents a “major expansion” of Ladakh’s electricity network.
The package includes a 189-km, 220 kV transmission line from Drass to Padum and a 79-km, 220 kV line from Phyang to Diskit, together with new substations across Zanskar, Nubra and Changthang. Mr Saxena made the announcement in a post on X and has ordered concerned departments to meet the September 15, 2026 deadline.
Officials say the new transmission network will provide reliable, round-the-clock power to Siachen Base Camp, Zanskar, Nubra and other remote border outposts. The improved supply is expected to strengthen local infrastructure and support services such as education, healthcare, tourism, livelihoods and digital connectivity in these high-altitude areas.
Large parts of remote Ladakh currently rely on diesel generators because rugged terrain and limited transmission lines have kept them off the grid. The projects are being carried out under the Centre’s Prime Minister’s Development Package (PMDP); authorities say the work will reduce dependence on diesel and advance the government’s goal of making Ladakh carbon-neutral.
Once finished, six of Ladakh’s seven districts will be tied to the grid. The administration is pushing to complete the network before winter, when extreme weather typically makes construction and logistics far more difficult.
