Revolutionary Powerhouses: Top Nuclear Companies Dominating the Race to Build Small Reactors in the U.S.

The nuclear power industry is on the brink of a transformation as it races toward developing advanced small reactors, targeting the early 2030s to fulfill the tech sector’s growing need for electricity, driven by advances in artificial intelligence. For decades, pressurized-water reactors have been the mainstay in nuclear energy, but their construction costs have soared. Plant Vogtle’s new reactors in Georgia, completed at $18 billion over budget and seven years late, are testament to this issue. These reactors can generate 1,114 megawatts, powering over 800,000 homes, but the financial and temporal demands are untenable, according to Chris Levesque, CEO of TerraPower, co-founded by Bill Gates. He emphasizes that traditional high-pressure technology is simply unaffordable.

There’s talk of reactivating dormant reactors like Palisades and Three Mile Island to plug the immediate energy gap, yet skepticism lingers around new builds. Advanced reactors promise smaller, more cost-effective, and quickly constructed designs once fully developed. However, with over 90 technologies vying for attention globally, the sector must identify the few viable for investment, says John Ketchum, CEO of NextEra Energy. Ketchum anticipates the first of these advanced reactors online by 2031, driven by tech giants’ insatiable demand for energy.

TerraPower, backed by Gates, SK Group, and ArcelorMittal, leads the charge in the U.S., transitioning from design to construction in 2024, with its first plant near Kemmerer, Wyoming. TerraPower’s Natrium reactor employs safer, low-pressure sodium cooling, allowing significant cutbacks in construction material and cost. Projected at operating temperatures far below sodium’s boiling point, these reactors offer safety with power to over 250,000 homes, potentially surging to 500 megawatts via a thermal battery. The effort is supported by $2 billion from the Department of Energy.

X-Energy, standout for securing Amazon’s investment, leverages helium coolant in its Xe-100 reactors. Amazon’s financial backing is pivotal, funding four reactors in Washington by the early 2030s, with expansion plans underway. Each 80-megawatt unit is designed for modular deployment to ease logistics. CEO Clay Sell highlights the strategic importance of Amazon’s involvement, aiding X-Energy’s growth alongside contributions from entities like Citadel and Ares Management. The Department of Energy’s $1.2 billion support marks a significant boost in X-Energy’s endeavors.

Kairos Power, partnering with Google, plans to supply 500 megawatts to YouTube by 2035. Its reactors employ molten fluoride salt as a coolant, much like TerraPower’s designs, ensuring safety with its innovative fuel encapsulation. A demonstration reactor is under construction in Tennessee, a site integral to historic atomic advances. CEO Mike Laufer underscores the agreement’s key role in scaling Kairos’ capabilities. He anticipates consolidation among advanced reactor firms, driven by execution capability.

This momentum in nuclear innovation, underscored by formidable tech sector investments, positions advanced reactors as pivotal players in the quest for sustainable, scalable energy solutions. The unfolding developments could redefine the nuclear landscape, meeting future energy demands with efficiency and agility.
