Indiscreet Travellers Face Consequences in Sikkim’s Scenic Atal Setu Area
Sikkim Takes a Stand Against Public Nuisance
In a bold move to maintain hygiene and cleanliness in public spaces, the Rangpo Nagar Panchayat (RNP) team in Sikkim has taken action against several travellers who were caught urinating in the open near the Atal Setu bridge. The incident took place on March 30, when a passenger bus halted near the bridge, and some passengers relieved themselves in the open area instead of using the available public restrooms.
The RNP team, on routine inspection, quickly intervened and imposed fines on the offenders. The bus driver was also penalized for failing to inform passengers about the rules against open defecation and the importance of cleanliness under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. According to officials, the bus driver’s negligence was a key factor in the incident, and he should have advised passengers to use the available public facilities.
Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang has been actively promoting cleanliness and discipline as part of his vision for a better and more sustainable Sikkim. His emphasis on Swachhata (cleanliness) being a way of life for every citizen resonates through the community. The Rangpo Nagar Panchayat has urged all residents, travellers, and transport operators to act responsibly and follow hygiene norms, setting an example for the town, which is an important entry point to Sikkim.
The state government has been taking strong measures to promote cleanliness, including the placement of signboards at key locations, informing the public about Swachh Bharat Abhiyan rules and penalties for violations. Awareness campaigns are also being conducted to educate people about the importance of sanitation. The officials emphasized that proper public toilets are available for use, and avoiding public urination will contribute to maintaining the beauty and hygiene of the town.
As part of their initiative, the Rangpo Nagar Panchayat has assured that strict monitoring will continue, and they have requested the cooperation of citizens in keeping Sikkim clean. “A clean environment is the responsibility of everyone. We need people to follow rules and use public facilities instead of polluting public places,” an RNP official said.
The Sikkim government’s efforts to promote cleanliness and discipline are a crucial step in maintaining the state’s beauty and well-being. As the Rangpo Nagar Panchayat’s actions demonstrate, there can be severe consequences for those who disregard public hygiene norms. As Chief Minister Tamang emphasized, cleanliness should be a way of life for every citizen, and the state is committed to making it a reality.
