Congress MP Rahul Gandhi is set to visit Assam on Monday amid the ongoing flood crisis, according to party officials. Gandhi will land at Kumbhigram airport in Silchar, Cachar district, before heading to strife-torn Manipur. He will first visit a flood relief camp in Lakhipur to meet victims who have sought refuge there. This visit marks Gandhi’s first trip to the Northeast since becoming the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha.

The flood situation in Assam has impacted approximately 22.70 lakh individuals across 28 districts this year, with 78 fatalities reported due to floods, landslides, and storms. The Congress leader will return to Silchar before proceeding to Imphal as part of his tour of Manipur.

On July 6, Gandhi took to X, expressing his condolences to the affected families and urging both Congress and government entities to support rescue and rehabilitation efforts. “The flood situation in Assam is becoming increasingly dangerous. My thoughts are with our brothers and sisters reeling under the deluge. Deepest condolences to the bereaved families,” Gandhi posted.

The flood crisis has intensified, with the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reporting eight additional deaths on Sunday. Fatalities were registered in Dhubri, Nalbari, Cachar, Goalpara, Dhemaji, and Sivsagar districts, raising the toll to 78 for the current flooding season.

Rescue operations in the past 24 hours have saved 70 people and 459 cattle, as reported by ASDMA.

The situation remains critical, further highlighted by the alarming rise in wildlife casualties at Kaziranga National Park, with 129 animal deaths predominantly due to drowning. The flood’s extensive impact necessitates urgent support and coordinated relief efforts from all stakeholders.
