Heartbreaking Bulldozer Action Rocks Delhi’s Old Rajinder Nagar: Tragic UPSC Aspirants’ Deaths in Basement Flooding | Watch Now
Delhi Authorities Take Swift Action Following Tragic Deaths of UPSC Aspirants
In response to the tragic deaths of three UPSC aspirants who drowned due to severe waterlogging at Rau’s Study Circle coaching centre, Delhi authorities mobilized bulldozers on Monday to clear encroachments over drains in Old Rajinder Nagar. This incident has underscored the urgent need for improved drainage and flood management in the city.
The Delhi Police arrested five individuals, including the owner of the basement where the tragedy occurred and the owner of the vehicle that struck the coaching centre gate in Karol Bagh. Concurrently, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) initiated an anti-encroachment drive to remove illegal structures obstructing storm drains, which exacerbated the flooding.
On Monday, bulldozers were deployed near Rau’s IAS Study Circle to address the encroachments. Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi scheduled an emergency meeting with civic officials to discuss the incident and necessary response measures.
Following the flooding caused by heavy rains that led to the deaths of the three students, the police sealed the coaching centre. The MCD, responsible for maintaining stormwater drains, reportedly faced allegations of malfunctioning drainage near the coaching centre, resulting in significant rainwater accumulation and subsequent basement flooding.
In the aftermath, the MCD terminated a junior engineer and suspended an assistant engineer from the Karol Bagh Zone’s maintenance department. The junior engineer’s contract was terminated immediately, while the assistant engineer will receive a subsistence allowance during the suspension period. Official termination and suspension orders are expected to be issued soon.
Additionally, the MCD sealed 13 illegal coaching centres in the area on Sunday. Delhi LG VK Saxena visited the flooded coaching centre on Monday and spoke with protesting students, addressing their concerns following the tragic loss of life.
This swift and multifaceted response highlights the city’s commitment to addressing the underlying issues that led to this preventable catastrophe and ensuring the safety of its residents.
