Request for Reinstatement of Assam Muslim Marriages Act Submitted to Chief Minister
Dhubri, July 29 – A memorandum appealing for the reinstatement of the Assam Muslim Marriages Act, which facilitates the registration of Muslim marriages and divorces, was submitted to the Chief Minister of Assam through the Dhubri district commissioner on Monday.
Qazi Ishak Ali Choudhury highlighted the difficulties Muslims are experiencing due to recent changes in the marriage and divorce registration process. Local residents voiced their concerns, stating that the Assam cabinet’s decision to implement new regulations has complicated the process of registering Qazi marriages across the state.
The memorandum underscored that the Muslim Marriage Registry, known as Qazi, has been responsible for registering Muslim marriages since 1935. However, for the past four months, individuals have been unable to register their marriages, making it challenging to adhere to various government directives.
As a result, Qazis formally requested the reintroduction of the traditional Muslim Marriage Registration Act of 1935. They urged the Chief Minister to issue immediate instructions to recommence marriage registrations. Furthermore, Qazis demanded amendments to the current legislation to facilitate the revival of the former registration act.
