KOKRAJHAR: Assam’s ‘City of Peace’ is abuzz as Kokrajhar takes center stage to host the opening match of the 133rd Durand Cup at SAI Stadium on July 30. This historic event marks the first of seven matches slated for Kokrajhar, featuring a thrilling clash between Northeast United FC and Bodoland FC. Out of the seven matches to be held at SAI Stadium, six are Group E encounters, along with one quarterfinal.
Extensive preparations spearheaded by the Indian Army and Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) have been in full swing to ensure the tournament’s success. The stadium has seen major upgrades, including enhanced floodlight systems for night matches and a state-of-the-art drainage system to tackle rain disruptions.
Adding to the excitement, the opening ceremony promises a vibrant mix of military displays by the Indian Armed Forces and a cultural extravaganza by the local community. The ceremony begins at 3 PM on July 30, with gates opening at 12 PM. This significant event coincides with Anti-Terrorism Day in the Bodoland Territorial Region, symbolizing the restoration of peace and normalcy.
Football enthusiasts can look forward to an exhilarating opening match featuring skilled players and experienced coaches from Bodoland FC and North East United FC. Besides Kokrajhar, other host cities for this prestigious football tournament include Kolkata, Jamshedpur, and Shillong. The Durand Cup sees the participation of 24 teams, including three from the Indian Armed Forces and two services teams from Nepal and Bangladesh, all vying for the coveted Durand Cup Trophies.
While this is the second year Kokrajhar is hosting the tournament, Kolkata has been a constant venue for the past five years. The enduring legacy of the Durand Cup continues to bring together communities, athletes, and football fans from across the region and beyond.
