Tragic Loss: Remembering 3 Promising UPSC Students Lost to Flooding at Rajender Nagar IAS Coaching Centre
Three UPSC aspirants tragically lost their lives on Saturday evening after being trapped in a flooded basement at a coaching centre in Old Rajendra Nagar, Delhi. The victims have been identified as Shreya Yadav from Uttar Pradesh, Tanya Soni from Telangana, and Nivin Dalwin from Kerala, all of whom were students at Rau’s IAS Study Centre.
The incident, which occurred around 7 pm, was reported to the Delhi fire department, which received a distress call about severe waterlogging at the study centre and nearby Karol Bagh area. Initial reports indicated that two or three students were trapped in the flooded basement. Rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local police were dispatched to the scene.
Upon arrival, rescuers found the basement inundated with water. Their efforts to pump out the water were initially impeded by ongoing rainfall, which kept the water level high. However, they eventually reduced the water level from 12 feet to eight feet and were able to retrieve the bodies of the trapped students several hours later.
Approximately 30 students were in the coaching centre at the time of the incident. Of these, 12 to 14 students were rescued and transported to a hospital for treatment, while others managed to escape on their own.
The police have since concluded the rescue operation and launched an investigation to determine how the water entered the basement and the rationale behind holding a class under such hazardous conditions. The owner and coordinator of the coaching centre have been detained, and a criminal case has been registered concerning the deaths.
This tragic event raises serious concerns about disaster preparedness and the accountability of establishments in ensuring the safety of their occupants, especially in areas prone to waterlogging. The investigation is ongoing to prevent such incidents in the future.
