Olympic Sustainability: Paris 2024 Embraces Eco-Innovations Amidst Rising Global Temperatures

As Europe grapples with a heat wave, athletes at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics may still contend with soaring temperatures. The increasing global heat means major sporting events like the Olympics and FIFA World Cup must adapt to ensure safety and maintain the integrity of the competition. To mitigate the effects, organizers have shifted events to cooler times and locations, such as moving marathons to early mornings or different cities.

Historically, climate change has posed significant threats, especially to winter sports, by shortening seasons and altering weather patterns. For instance, the 2022 Beijing Winter Games had to manufacture artificial snow for ski runs. Summer sports aren’t spared either, dealing with extreme heat and storms. In response, federations like FIFA have rescheduled events, as seen with the 2022 Men’s World Cup shifted to November in Qatar.

The sustainability of the Olympics has been central to its charter since 1996 due to the environmental impacts associated with large events. The 2012 London Olympics introduced ISO2012, guiding sustainable practices from construction to catering, a legacy carried forward to Paris. The 2024 Games will prioritize renewable energy, using existing venues, low-carbon materials, recyclable resources, and robust public transportation to minimize vehicular emissions. They’re even cutting the carbon footprint of meals by incorporating more plant-based foods.

Despite these measures, the Paris Games will inevitably have a significant carbon footprint, particularly from international travel. However, they aim to slash emissions from construction and operations by half compared to the 2012 London and Rio 2016 Games.

Ultimately, the Paris Olympics aspire to be a world’s fair of sustainability, showcasing innovations and eco-friendly practices. This global stage will not only highlight these efforts but also inspire millions, encouraging sustainable behaviors and advocacy within local communities. As the largest sporting event on Earth, the Olympics have a unique platform to spearhead environmental change and influence future global events.
