Historic Triumph: India Shatters T20I Record in Sri Lanka as Riyan Parag Dominates with 3 Wickets
India Triumphs Over Sri Lanka in First T20I with 43-Run Win
India clinched a 43-run victory against Sri Lanka in the first T20I of a three-match series at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on July 27. Assam’s Riyan Parag played a pivotal role, securing a 3-wicket haul.
India, asked to bat first, posted an imposing 213/7—its highest T20I score on Sri Lankan soil. Captain Suryakumar Yadav led the charge with a dazzling half-century, earning him the ‘man of the match’ accolade. Indian openers Shubman Gill (34 off 16) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (40 off 21) laid a solid foundation with a quick-fire 74-run partnership. Despite consecutive dismissals of Gill and Jaiswal by Dilshan Madushanka and Wanindu Hasaranga, Yadav maintained the tempo, registering the second-fastest T20I half-century in just 22 balls.
For Sri Lanka, bowler Matheesha Pathirana stood out, returning figures of 4/40 in his four overs. Chasing 214, Sri Lanka’s openers Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis gave a strong start, combining for an 84-run stand off 52 balls. Arshdeep Singh—India’s reliable pacer—ended the partnership by dismissing Mendis for 45 (27) in the ninth over.
Sri Lanka faced a significant setback when Riyan Parag dismissed their captain Charith Asalanka for a duck. Parag was instrumental in putting the brakes on the chase, conceding just five runs in an over, claiming the scalp of Kamindu Mendis (12 off 8), and effecting a crucial run-out. Ultimately, Sri Lanka’s innings faltered as they were bundled out for 170 in 19.2 overs. Nissanka’s valiant 79 off 48 deliveries went in vain.
For India, apart from Parag’s remarkable figures of 3/5 in 1.2 overs, Arshdeep Singh (2/24) and Axar Patel (2/38) also shone with the ball, securing two wickets each. This victory sets the tone for the remainder of the series, with India leading 1-0.
