Heartfelt Farewell: Shafi, Esteemed Malayalam Filmmaker, Passes at 56 – Cherished for Iconic Collaborations with Dileep
Renowned Malayalam filmmaker Shafi, cherished for his comedic storytelling that delighted Malayali audiences, passed away at 56 in a Kochi hospital early Saturday morning. Fondly known as Rasheed M H, Shafi had been in critical condition following a stroke on January 16 and succumbed to his ailment at 12.25 am, as confirmed by hospital sources. The news was corroborated by actor Vishnu Unnikrishnan, who paid tribute on Facebook, reminiscing about Shafi’s ability to create laughter and unforgettable narratives that will be remembered fondly.
Shafi began his cinematic journey as an assistant director under the guidance of acclaimed filmmaker Rajasenan. He made a remarkable entry into the Malayalam film industry with his directorial debut, “One Man Show,” in 2001. Over two decades, Shafi helmed more than ten films, establishing himself as a master of comedy in cinema. His successful collaborations with actor Dileep led to several hit films, including “Kalyanaraman,” “Marykkundoru Kunjaadu,” and “Two Countries,” which won the hearts of audiences and cemented his status in the industry.
Among his other notable works are “Pulival Kalyanam,” “Thommanum Makkalum,” “Mayavi,” and “Chattambinadu,” which contributed to his legacy as a celebrated director. His last film, “Aanandam Paramanandam,” was released in 2022.
Shafi’s contributions to Malayalam cinema are further underscored by his familial ties; his elder brother, Rafi, is part of the famous writer-director duo Rafi-Mecartin, and his uncle was the late esteemed filmmaker Siddique.
Shafi’s body has been moved to his residence on BTS Road in Edappally, Kochi. It will be made available for public tribute at the Cochin Service Co-operative Bank Hall, Kaloor, from 9 am to 12 pm on Sunday. The funeral is scheduled for 4 pm at Kaloor Muslim Juma Masjid, as announced by his family. Shafi’s passing marks the end of an era in Malayalam comedy cinema, with his films leaving an enduring impact.
