Empowering Democracy: Nagaland CEO Champions Free, Fair & Peaceful Voting on National Voters’ Day
On January 25, Nagaland celebrated the 15th National Voters’ Day (NVD) at Patkai Christian College (Autonomous) with the theme “Nothing Like Voting, I Vote for Sure.” This event highlighted the critical role of active participation in the electoral process to fortify democratic values. Nagaland Chief Electoral Officer Vyasan R led the gathering in taking the NVD Pledge, emphasizing the importance of free, fair, and peaceful elections.
Special Guest Thavaseelan K, Principal Director of School Education, underscored the enormity of India’s elections, noting a voter base exceeding 99 crore, and praised the Election Commission’s role in ensuring impartial and robust electoral processes. He highlighted that, for the first time, women’s voter turnout surpassed that of men during the 18th Lok Sabha elections.
Addressing contemporary challenges like misinformation and cybersecurity, Thavaseelan stressed the importance of informed voting, which shapes a nation’s future. He introduced the inversion philosophy—focusing on avoiding poor leadership to clarify aspirations for governance—a strategy against voter apathy. He urged young voters to engage in the electoral process and encouraged empowering marginalised groups, promoting active citizenship.
Deputy Commissioner Polan John echoed the call for youth participation, recognizing young voters as essential to strengthening democracy. Dr. Rudowhelie Peseyie, Vice Principal of Patkai Christian College, further highlighted the importance of voting, urging young voters to make informed and ethical choices.
The gathering also commemorated the collaborative efforts by various departments, including the Election Department’s extensive preparations, to ensure smooth elections. The event featured messages and performances, honoring key figures and first-time voters, underscoring the collective commitment to uphold democratic traditions. CEO Nagaland Vyasan R concluded by reiterating the commitment to democracy through active participation, urging citizens to vote without bias or inducement.
