Celebrating Excellence: Twelve Remarkable Northeast Icons Honored with Prestigious Padma Awards 2025
President Droupadi Murmu has announced the recipients of the esteemed Padma Shri award, recognizing distinguished individuals from across India. Among the honored are twelve remarkable figures from Northeast India, celebrated for their contributions to folk art, social service, literature, education, and agriculture. This year’s announcement includes a total of 139 Padma awards, comprising seven Padma Vibhushan, 19 Padma Bhushan, and 113 Padma Shri awards. Notably, 23 of the awardees are women, with the list also featuring 10 individuals from the Foreigners/NRI/PIO/OCI category and 13 posthumous honorees.
The Padma Awards, among India’s most prestigious civilian honors, are categorized into Padma Vibhushan for exceptional and distinguished service, Padma Bhushan for high-order distinguished service, and Padma Shri for distinguished service in varied fields such as art, social work, science, medicine, literature, education, sports, and public affairs. Traditionally, these awards are announced on Republic Day each year.

- Sikkim: Naren Gurung (Art)
- Mizoram: Renthlei Lalrawna (Literature and Education)
- Manipur: Thiyam Suryamukhi Devi (Art)
These honors not only recognize individual achievements but also highlight the rich cultural and social contributions of India’s northeastern region.
