Indra Hang’s Transformative Experience in Mumbai-Goa: A Bold Step in Parliamentary Innovation
Indra Hang Subba, the Lok Sabha MP from Sikkim, recently participated in a study visit to Mumbai and Goa alongside the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Consumer Affairs, Food, and Public Distribution. The visit, which occurred from January 21 to 24, was led by committee chairperson Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, and aimed to address pivotal consumer rights issues in the banking sector and the efficiency of public distribution systems.
On January 23, the committee conducted in-depth discussions with representatives from the Department of Consumer Affairs, Department of Financial Services, State Bank of India, and several other major banks. These discussions primarily focused on ‘Safeguarding Consumer Rights in the Banking Sector,’ especially concerning challenges in India’s western region. As an active participant, Indra Hang Subba underscored the importance of consumer protection, transparency, and accessibility in financial services.
On the same day, the committee toured the Food Storage Depot (FSD) managed by the Food Corporation of India in Goa. Indra Hang expressed appreciation for the depot’s state-of-the-art storage practices and the vital role it plays in the Public Distribution System. He acknowledged the dedication of FCI officials and workers in maintaining food security through meticulous storage and timely distribution of food grains.
The following day, the committee engaged with representatives from the Food Corporation of India, Central Warehousing Corporation, and Konkan Railways. The discussions focused on optimizing food grain transportation via the railways, with specific attention to Goa. Indra Hang advocated for improved coordination between railways and storage depots to minimize delays and reduce wastage, stressing the importance of advanced logistics for regions like Sikkim that lack railway infrastructure.
This study visit provided a platform for collaborative dialogues on crucial issues affecting consumers and food security. Indra Hang Subba reiterated his commitment to enhancing consumer welfare and strengthening public distribution systems to ensure equitable resource access for all citizens.
