Unforgettable Heroic Rescue: How a Strong, Naked Stranger Saved Skunk Anansie’s Skin from a Perilous Sea
Skin, born in London and now 57, initially pursued a career in interior design before becoming the lead singer of the renowned band Skunk Anansie in 1994. The band achieved widespread acclaim with hit singles such as “Weak” and “Hedonism.” In 1999, Skin made history as the first black woman to headline Glastonbury. After a break in the early 2000s, Skunk Anansie reunited in 2009. Their latest single, “An Artist Is An Artist,” is out now, and they will kick off a UK and European tour on February 28. Skin currently resides between New York and London with her partner, LadyFag, and their three-year-old daughter.
Reflecting on her past, Skin reminisces about the excitement of touring during the band’s early years, especially in America. Her greatest fear is the rise of right-wing extremism worldwide. She admits her strongest and most regrettable trait is loyalty, as it often leads to disappointment. Skin expresses disdain for those who take pleasure in being unkind and impolite and cites her appearance on ITV’s “The Masked Singer” in 2020 as a moment of embarrassment.
Her most valued possession is joy, and ideally, Brad Pitt would play her in a film, if you squint. Skin finds large phone cameras lacking in manners and struggles with finding fashion suitable for her figure. She humorously notes that her worst critique was not making “the music of our people,” despite her love for watermelon and chicken. Preferencing anonymity over fame, she confesses to enjoying the perks of fame, like skipping queues. The biggest letdown for Skin is not achieving massive success in America.
Given the chance, she would reclaim seven lost years from a past relationship. Skin hopes to teach her children confidence and resilience. Personally, she desires an online world free of unsolicited opinions, valuing her career success as her greatest achievement. As for the afterlife, she believes nothing follows the end of brain activity.
