Unveiling the Mysteries: Why NASA’s Bold Rocket Missions Are Piercing the Northern Lights
NASA is undertaking an ambitious mission to explore the enigmatic movements of the Northern Lights, or polar auroras, by launching rockets into the Alaskan night sky. These captivating displays, resembling ribbons of light that span the entire color spectrum, are unique phenomena powered by charged particles from solar flares interacting with Earth’s magnetic field. However, the precise reasons why auroras exhibit distinct behaviors—such as pulsating, flickering, or featuring dark "holes"—remain a scientific puzzle.
To unlock these mysteries, NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center is conducting two creatively named missions from the Poker Flat Research Range in Fairbanks, Alaska. The first mission, Ground Imaging to Rocket Investigation of Auroral Fast Features (GIRAFF), aims to examine fast-pulsating auroras, which flash several times a second, as well as flickering auroras, which can flicker up to 15 times a second. Rockets launched in this mission will carry instruments to measure the interactions between electrons from solar flares and those in Earth’s magnetosphere.
A second mission, the Black and Diffuse Aurora Science Surveyor, will focus on investigating the dark areas or "holes" within auroras. Equipped with necessary instruments, these rockets will offer critical data to better understand the underlying conditions that cause these unique auroral features.
Accurate timing for the launch is contingent upon favorable wind conditions in Alaska. Both mission teams will track the auroras using ground-based cameras stationed at the launch site and the down-range observatory in Venetie, Alaska, 130 miles northeast.
Auroras have fascinated people since antiquity, with one of the first scientific accounts credited to Aristotle in the fourth century. The term "Aurora Borealis" is attributed to astronomer Galileo.
