AJP Urgently Calls for PM & Governor’s Bold Intervention in Combating Illegal Coal Mining Crisis | Guwahati News
The Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya to investigate an alleged illegal coal mining scandal in Assam. The organization accuses high-ranking state politicians of being involved in unauthorized coal mining activities. Memorandums have been dispatched to both the PM and the governor, highlighting these concerns. The AJP has also voiced strong disapproval of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s handling of the issue. According to the AJP’s general secretary, Jagadish Bhuyan, despite the CM’s announcement about forming a commission to tackle illegal coal mining, no serious legal measures have been enforced against those responsible. Bhuyan pointed out inconsistencies in the CM’s statements regarding the status of the Umrangshu coal mine, initially deemed unused for 12 years and later identified as illegal along with 220 other similar mines. While there were claims of efforts to shut down illegal mines within seven days, including notable areas like Umrangshu, Ledo, and Margherita, Bhuyan questioned the absence of legal action against operators, traders, syndicate runners, and complicit officials. The memorandums aim to inform the state’s constitutional head and the country’s Prime Minister about the party’s concerns. The AJP also plans to escalate the matter to the National Green Tribunal and the Supreme Court if necessary, underscoring their determination to see justice served.
