Urgent Plea: Kuki-Zo Group Calls for Immediate Removal of Manipuri Subject in Moreh Schools!
The Hill Tribal Council (HTC), a prominent Kuki-Zo organization in Manipur’s Tengnoupal district, has announced a directive for all educational institutions in Moreh town to exclude the Manipuri subject from their curriculums starting from the 2025-2026 academic year. This decision, communicated through an official notification, mandates both government and private schools to discontinue the teaching of Manipuri, also known as Meetei Mayek.
HTC explained that the directive is aimed at promoting “useful and productive” education while honoring the cultural and emotional significance of the indigenous Kuki-Zo community. This move is set against the backdrop of an ongoing political conflict between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities within the state. The council suggests that students instead focus on alternative subjects such as Hindi, English, or other Modern Indian Languages like Mizo, Thadou, Hmar, Zou, Maring, Anal, Vaiphei, Paite, and Gangte.
Non-compliance with this directive may result in unspecified penalties, underscoring the seriousness of the council’s position. It’s noteworthy that the Meitei language, which is the official language of Manipur, uses the Meitei Mayek script, a script with historical roots tracing back to the 6th century according to the Sahitya Akademi.
This significant shift in educational policy reflects the complex socio-political landscape in Manipur and the challenges of balancing cultural identity and educational priorities amid ongoing ethnic tensions.
